Defeating Boomerang Battles

Ever go through a situation, get all the way through it only to have it come back? It’s like no matter what you do you just can’t get completely past it, because it keeps showing up! I like to call these boomerang battles. The enemy loves these. They usually involve someone we’ve loved deeply who hurt us in some way or another. And so we love, we hurt, we forgive, we move on but they follow us, or the situation follows us, the pain, the love. Either way, that thing just keeps coming back! So how do we avoid these brutal boomerang battles? Well, we don’t.

I wish I could tell you there’s an easy way to conquer them, but there isn’t. There is however one thing that will make it not nearly as bad as it could be. It’s something like a rebound in that it will help you bounce back. And not only will you bounce back, you’ll be stronger and better (not bitter!) than you were before. It’s Jesus Christ of course! Putting your time thoughts and energies into building your relationship with Christ is the best thing you can do in a boomerang battle. It will keep you focused on positive things and not so much on the pain. It will keep your heart open to the opportunity to love again. It will give you everything you need to get through until the battle is over, really over.

It’ll take time, but the more time we have with our minds on Jesus the better we are. If you’re in the middle of a boomerang battle, hold on! Stay focused on God. You will get through. And when you want to turn to something you know you don’t need in an effort to cope remember this, there is only one place to find lasting reprieve from the heartache we endure, and that is through the love of Jesus Christ.
