The Spirit of Fear

The spirit of fear is one that we all struggle with at some point or another in our lives. I am of course no exception to this and recently I have been battling this spirit. I wanted to take some time to share a bit of what I’ve been experiencing and how I’ve been fighting it.

I pray that this insight blesses you all today and that if any of your are also battling the spirit of fear, that you remain steadfast in your effort.

Stop Hating

Sometimes we can be so critical, so judgmental and unsupportive. Sometimes we can be down right haters! And it’s not just anyone that we hate on, it’s ourselves.

Hating that comes in the form of envy and jealousy is obviously not healthy. But what can be fatal is hating that comes in the form of negative self talk. Telling yourself that you can’t do something, that you’re not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, those words have the ability to suck the life out of you. We may not think about it but when we put those negative words into the atmosphere we give them life. But why do we do that? Why don’t we believe in ourselves? Well, it’s like this, we don’t know who we are in Christ.

The Word of God defines us in so many ways but we either don’t have the knowledge or don’t truly believe that we are what the Word says we are. Hosea 4:6 says that we are destroyed by lack of knowledge. We have to know who we are or the enemy will use that lack of knowledge to keep us from the life God has for us.

It’s time to get to know the person God intended for you to be. This is just a glimpse at who you are:

A new creation. Old things are passed away, all things are new (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14)

More than a conqueror (Romans 8:37)

Fearless (2 Timothy 1:7)

An overcomer (Revelation 12:11)

A lender not a borrower (Deuteronomy 15:6)

The head and not the tail (Deuteronomy 28:13

Healed (Isaiah 53:5)

Forgiven (Ephesians 1:7-8)

And there is so much more! Stop hating on yourself and start speaking who you are in Christ Jesus. That’s one of the first steps to actually becoming.

The Church Search

Four months since my family and I relocated to Atlanta and this weekend we finally made our first church visit.  Making the decision to get out there and search was a big one…especially when our home church streams service online and we can easily stream it through our AppleTV.   As awesome as it is to still have access to a Word from a Pastor we know we’ll be fed from  it’s just not the same as attending service.

The Word tells us not to forsake the assembling of one another and as with everything else in the Bible, there’s a great reason for it.  Although things were different at this church, the Word wasn’t as in depth as we would have liked and the Pastor was more careful with his delivery, there was still something about being in the presence of God and so many other believers that was overwhelmingly beautiful.  Even our three-year old son thoroughly enjoyed being back at children’s church.

The trouble is, looking for a church to replace one that you love is not easy! When you’ve grown to love a church family it’s extremely difficult to find a church that’s comparable. The trick for us is being reminded of these key things:

No Pastor is going to be just like our Pastor – It’s easy to look for similarities to your Pastor at every church you attend  but every Pastor is different and at the end of the day receiving a Bible based Word and having a solid ability to grow there is what truly matters.

DO NOT forsake the assembling of ourselves – For us, I can see it being easy to give up on looking for a church because we still have access to our home church, but God’s Word doesn’t say not to forsake the assembling of ourselves for no reason.  We must heed the Word of God even when it’s not easy or when we don’t want to.

If you’re also looking for a church, stay encouraged, keep praying about it and keep looking.  God will lead us exactly where He wants us to be.
