Captive Thoughts

Have you ever found yourself being consumed by fear? That was me earlier this year.  Perhaps in growing older and with my family continuing to grow I just started to get overwhelmed with the thought of things going wrong.  I finally asked myself why I was throwing around all of these what if scenarios, and I realized that, I was afraid.

When I realized it was fear, I knew it was the enemy because 2 Timothy 1:7 says that God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power love and sound mind. I was being attacked by the enemy.  But it wasn’t just his efforts.  I was actually allowing this to happen.  I was taking these wrong and negative thoughts and letting them supersede the Word of God.

The Bible says that God has given us all power over the enemy (Luke 10:19) yet we sometimes act as if we are powerless.  It’s all a trick!  The more we allow those negative thoughts to enter our mind and refuse to correct them by making them obedient to the Word of God, we are giving the enemy dominion over our thoughts.

So how do we fix this. Here are a three key actions that can help:

Feed your faith:  Every time a negative thought arises challenge it with the Word of God.  Find scriptures that fit your scenario and repeat them out loud when ever those negative thoughts enter your mind.

Take up your power:  Continue moving in the direction of your fear. The more you challenge your fear by moving towards it the more power you gain over it. You are in charge of your thoughts! Take up your power!

Know who you are:  If you don’t know who you are the enemy will try to tell you.  Don’t let the enemy define you.  God has already done that in his Word.  Go back and remind yourself. You are not a failure,  you are more than a conquerer in Christ Jesus. You are an overcomer. You are blessed.

The Power of Influence

The Staten Island beauty we now see slaying photos, modeling for big time brands and serving up doses of Christian knowledge on her Instagram page, was initially extremely apprehensive about putting herself in the spotlight. “I was scared! I didn’t want to deal with all the criticism I saw other bloggers dealing with.” As a matter of fact, if it wasn’t for her good friends and boyfriend of 3 years who actually opened her Instagram account and YouTube channel, Curls and Couture may have never been born. Its amazing how sometimes the people around us can see things inside of us that we ourselves can’t see, while some others can be utterly clueless about our potential. The decision to accept or not accept those influences made all the difference for Courtney.

“You just don’t seem like the natural type.” This was the response Courtney got when she shared her decision to go natural with her family back in 2013. Fortunately this strong willed woman went for it anyway. As she grew her hair and mastered her go-to twist out style, the same individuals who were so reluctant about her decision were asking for tips on how to successfully make the transition themselves.

In the midst of going natural and apprehensively building the Curls and Couture brand, Courtney was also in school studying to receive her Masters Degree in Molecular Biology, which she recently earned. With plans to move on to med school to become a surgeon, Courtney had known for years that medicine would be in her future.

With a passion for the sciences since she was a little girl, becoming a doctor was without question. Perhaps the other major lasting thing that stuck with her from childhood was her knowledge of Jesus Christ. Growing up with a mother and grandmother as Ministers it would be hard not to know Him. But, its one thing to know Jesus and quite another to follow Him.

A Well Made Up Mind

After growing up in the church and being a part of the Missionetts, a ministry for young girls, Courtney made up her mind at the age of 11 that she wanted to give her life to Christ. It wasn’t until her late teens and early adulthood that she would find that the power of influence would yet again come in to play, this time making it challenging to follow the Word of God.

Like so many of us in our early adulthood its easy to get caught up in doing things that aren’t pleasing to Christ all for the sake of trying to have a good time. Courtney was no different. “I’m so glad I had a good foundation in Christ.” It was that foundation that would help lead her back to the right path. She prayed for God to guide her and that’s exactly what He did, the cost, losing friends.

With a well made up mind and a support system of like-minded individuals, Courtney began to truly follow Christ, and as she did, she found that His favor seemed to pour down on her, so long as she walked according to His Word. Now focused in the right direction Courtney also uncovered even more interests and talents that God had put on the inside of her that formulated into the characteristics of a true Renaissance Woman.

Characteristics of a Renaissance Woman

While pursuing her passion of medicine this member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority met and began seriously dating her videographer boyfriend, Ty. Seeing the talent of natural hair influence within her is what encouraged him to push her into the world that most of us have come to know her.

Why not build a brand (Curls and Couture) while studying for your Masters Degree in Molecular Biology, grow it to over 45K supporters, work with big natural hair brands, confess your faith through that platform, inadvertently lead others to Christ and co-find and direct the creative for an online magazine (Black Girl Fly Mag)? And, while you’re at it, discover yet another passion for health and fitness and start making moves to compete in a fitness competition. Oh, and because God has also given you a desire to help others why not start thinking up a way to bring all of these areas together into one amazing business idea that could change the game. Seriously!? Yes, seriously!

Somewhere along her life journey Courtney wants to start a business that could revolutionize women’s hair care and wellness services. But…that’s all that I can share as I am sworn to secrecy. I will however say this, DO NOT lose sight of the woman, she’s got major plans. As a matter of fact, one might be intimated by such a strong willed woman seemingly destined for greatness, but her genuineness and love of Christ exudes so strongly that those feelings never have an opportunity to take flight.

Talking with this woman was so inspiring. There is greater reason than her head full of hair to follow this 26 year old ultra talented woman with the power of influence, a well made up mind, and most importantly the favor of God on her life.

Want to keep up with Courtney? Be sure to follow her!

The Answer To Your Indecision

You’re so focused on this decision that it’s started to consume you. It’s constantly on your mind.  You spend much of your days and nights weighing the pros and cons of your options and still end up unsure.  Maybe your emotions are heavily involved and dictating the choice you’re leaning towards.  Or maybe you’d rather not make a decision at all because it’s just too hard.  Lord knows that I have been in both of these scenarios and when it comes to big decision making, the answer is this, change your focus.

You’re too caught up, too overwhelmed and too consumed by the choices in front of you to make a sound decision. So, rather than continue to focus on the situation and your options, focus on God.  He is the only one that truly knows the best choice for you. Stop trying to figure it out on your own when you have access to the spirit and Word of God that can and will guide you to making the right choice.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  All of the contemplating that you’re doing is the sheer essence of leaning on your own understanding. Stop! Instead, bring the situation to God in prayer and focus on His Word.  The more you get His Word on the inside of you the more clearly you will hear that still small voice guiding you in the direction that you should go.

Decision making encourages our growth in Christ. But in order to take advantage of those opportunities for growth we have to first realize that the decisions we face are not there for us to make them alone. They are there for us to utilize the readily available help that we have access to in Jesus Christ.  I’m not saying that it’s easy.  But as difficult as some of our choices may be we’d rather suffer through the decision making than trust and submit to the will of God. But why? Fear. We’re afraid that what we want for ourselves may not be God’s will for us.  It’s a trick of the enemy. DO NOT be afraid. God wants to give you His best, let Him. Submit to His will.   If you don’t get what you want it’s because He has something better.

Bottom line is this, change your focus. Stop stressing, worrying, and losing sleep about this decision you have to make. Take it to God. Tell Him that you’re trusting in Him to guide you in the direction you should go. And tell Him that despite what you may want, staying in His will is what’s most important because you know that the best life you can have only comes in lining up with His will.  Then, get in His Word, keep your focus there and watch what happens.

Joshua 1:8 – Mediate on the Word night and day. Then you will make your way prosperous and you will have good success.

The Spirit of Fear

The spirit of fear is one that we all struggle with at some point or another in our lives. I am of course no exception to this and recently I have been battling this spirit. I wanted to take some time to share a bit of what I’ve been experiencing and how I’ve been fighting it.

I pray that this insight blesses you all today and that if any of your are also battling the spirit of fear, that you remain steadfast in your effort.

3 Tips To Letting Your Faith Be Bigger Than Your Fear

It’s easy to find excuses as to why we’re not ready to actively start working towards our dreams.  But no matter how we look at it, the root of those excuses is always fear. The thing to always note about fear is that it is not of God. The word tells us that God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power, love and sound mind. So, whenever fear creeps into our decision making we have to immediately realize that it is the enemy.

The enemy uses fear to keep us complacent. He doesn’t want us to have everything that God has for us. If he can keep us consumed in our fear we will never have it. Here are 3 ways to tell the enemy to kick rocks and let your faith be bigger than your fear.

1. Learn who you are in Christ (there’s a reminder here) and remind yourself every time the enemy tries to bury you in fear.

2. Know that ALL things work together for your good. Even the things the enemy intended for bad.

3. Consult Christ in your plans and desires. We want to be sure that we pass any ideas we have by the Lord. Ask Holy Spirit to guide and lead you. He always will. You can find a few tips I like to use on discernment here.

That’s it! Lets stop allowing fear to dictate our lives. Cling to the word of God and trust Him even if you have no idea how it’s all going to work, especially when you have no idea how it’s all going to work. Because when it does, they’ll be know doubt in your mind that it was God.

He Holds It All Together

Today’s Scripture
Colossians 1:17
“And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

Today’s Word
Colossians 1:17 is a pretty awesome scripture. It tells us Jesus is holding EVERYTHING together. Wow! Even people who don’t realize this are held together by Him. Think about it. We can’t have a good marriage if Jesus isn’t holding it together. If Jesus isn’t leading and guiding our personal relationships, then we aren’t going to have good ones. Our finances would be a mess without Jesus. Our minds and emotions would be a wreck without you Him. Everything would be a mess without Jesus.
If Jesus is not the most important thing in our life, then we need to rearrange our priorities. Matthew 6:33 tells us to seek God and His kingdom first because if we don’t have first things first, then everything else will also be out of order and cause us problems. God’s way of being, doing and seeking His kingdom, is to find out how He wants things done- how to treat people, how to act in situations, how to spend money, what kind of attitude to have, and what kind of entertainment He approves of. Start today by giving Him first place in your life. He’s holding you together…He created You to follow Him. Put Him first in your life.

Today’s Prayer
God, I am nothing without You. You hold me together…in fact, You hold everything together. You are the most important thing in my life and I put You first. In Jesus name. Amen.He hoo
